The Importance of Unions: History and Significance The earliest union was formed in 1768 in New York by Shoemakers. Since then unions continued to be formed but were deliberately exclusive to both specific workers and/or colors. Subsequently, at the beginning of the 1900’s the wage continued to be low, child labor and long work days were common with little to no healthcare, and workers had unsafe working conditions. The labor movement in the United States grew from the muckrakers informing the public of the need to protect the workers and provide them with fair and reasonable wages, hours, and working conditions (Leading the way: The progressive movement, 1890-1920, 2014, p. 610-612). The labor movement led efforts to stop child labor, give health benefits and provide aid to workers who were injured or retired (Labor movement - facts summary - HISTORY.com, n.d.). When comparing men's ability to women's ability, is there really a big difference? Many people believe that differences do take place, but how? Both men and women have hopes, dreams, strengths, weaknesses, and goals. Even though these similarities exist, women are still sometimes thought to be lower than their male peers. There have been many cases in which women felt they were being treated differently than the males around them. Both men and women have the right to serve in the military; but, many times women face discrimination and the problem of being unaccepted, possibly affecting women's ability to serve their country. The military was fully integrated in the mid-1970s (Moskos 107). Yet, twenty-some years later, women are still trying to gain full equality. In those past twenty years, there have been many courageous women who have been fighting their way into record-breaking positions so their male peers would accept them. Two of these women are Shannon Faulkner and Shannon Workman. Faulkner was the first woman to become a cadet at the Citadel as she walked through the gates on August 12, 1995. Faulkner entered the 152-year-old military school located in South Carolina as a "knob," or a first year cadet. Upon her arrival, the military made exceptions to certain rules for her, one being that older male cadets could not go through her drawers looking for underwear that was not folded properly. A private bathroom with surveillance cameras was also constructed for Faulkner to prevent any foul play (Sack 6). The second of these two women was Shannon Workman. Sex education isn’t encouraging students to have intercourse, but rather it is teaching them how to stay safe. Should kids their age be having sex? No. However, kids are kids. Because many view sex as a taboo outside of marriage, they do not wish for it to be taught at all, especially to youth. If the parents believe that the child should abstain from sex then this gives them a chance to talk about it with their child and why they believe so. Another important point to consider is the youth who do not have a particular adult to confide and ask about these feelings and urges they are experiencing. Parents do not talk about this subject to their children because either they are too busy with their daily life, don’t know how to talk about it, or they may feel uncomfortable. Therefore, sex education should be taught to them so that they would learn it from an educated and responsible adult instead of learning it from the media or their friends. Students aren’t getting the information that they need from the right places. Talking to friends or learning from social media is not the best way to learn about important topics such as sex. Abstinence is definitely the safest of all safe sex measures, but there is also a point where we have to accept reality. If you were to talk to teachers and administrators, they will tell you that students as young as middle school are engaging in oral sex. Most say that oral sex isn’t really sex. However, anyone with half a brain knows that to be the case. In conclusion, if sex education was taught in public middle schools, these situations could be prevented. The teen pregnancy rates would be lowered along with the STD rates. Students would be provided with the information they need to prevent getting an STD or getting pregnant at such a young age. They would also learn about many different places they can turn to for information or help with any situation they got themselves into. If sex education was being taught, they could open up to their parents about it and receive information from someone they know and are comfortable talking to.
